favicon

A favicon is a miniature icon/logo that appears in a number of places in a web browser and folders related to the browser. A favicon can appear next to a website's URL in the address bar of a web browser, in bookmarked sites, on the tabs in tabbed browsers, and as the icon for internet shortcuts on a desktop or other folders on a computer.

A favicon is often a version of a companies logo as the small 16x16 pixel size makes many logos unrecognizable. Click on the favicons below to view them in a browser.

Adding a favicon to a site requires an ".ico" file, usually called favicon.ico, that is uploaded to the main directory of a website. Most browsers, other than Internet Explorer, can use a GIF, animated GIF, or PNG. However, all browsers recognize the .ico format, so currently it is the preferred format.
