What are Animations?


The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is a bitmap image format that has widespread usage on the internet due to its wide support and portability. The format supports up to 8 bits per pixel, allowing a single image to reference a palette of up to 256 distinct colors chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space. It allows a separate palette of 256 colors for each frame. The color limitation makes the GIF format unsuitable for reproducing color photographs and other images with continuous color, but it is well-suited for simple images such as graphics or logos with solid areas of color. The end file size is much larger than a Flash file, but is a more accepted format on the web.

A Flash animation is created using Adobe Flash animation software. It can be created in Flash or with other programs capable of writing .swf files. The term Flash animation not only refers to the file format but to a certain kind of movement and visual style. Flash is capable of streaming both audio and high-end animation. Flash uses a range of art including, raster, vector and video to produce a finished animation. The final file format is lower than an animated gif as when it is converted to an swf file, it removes all unnecessary pixels. While the swf format is not as widely accepted on the web as an animated gif, it is the preferred format as smoother transitions and more powerful animations are the mainstay of this product.
